Preview: Batman: Arkham Knight (Multi-Platform)

If there's one thing that Batman is really good at, it's making twisted enemies everywhere he goes. Besides Arkham Knight, a lethal Batman doppelganger created for the game, there's the usual Rogues Gallery of villains including the Riddler (in a more active role this time around), Penguin, Two-Face, Harley Quinn, and Scarecrow, who appears to be the mastermind behind the terrible things that happen in Batman: Arkham Knight.

It's not a Batman game if the titular hero, again voiced by Kevin Conroy, can't glide all over the place. Note that Wayne Enterprises must be doing alright even in this middlin' economy because Batman's armour has improved since Arkham City.

Batman's clearly synchronizing his Bat-watch in this scene, featuring a Majora's Mask-sized moon in the background. Expect a plethora of new and improved utility belt accouterments, including a Batarang sensor for recon purposes and the always-important Detective Vision.

For the first time in a long time, the Batmobile makes a video game appearance. (Wasn't the last time it was seen in Arkham Asylum when it smashed into Bane? It's been a while.) Besides being a blunt force method of navigating Gotham -- it's more tank than agile race car, though it can switch between both -- and able to lay waste to vehicles and "soft" targets, it can also be put to use solving puzzles. Oh, and it can be controlled remotely and called to Batman's location on a moment's notice.

One of the biggest draws of the Batman games (and a general influence for a lot of action games since Arkham Asylum) is the hand-to-hand combat. There's lot of timing and countering involved, but like so much of what Batman: Arkham Knight has in store, there are plenty of improvements, including the ability to temporarily use melee items wrestled away from foes, fling enemies at their comrades, and a new "Fear Takedown," which involves remaining undetected then launching into a slow motion bone-crunching ballet with up to three enemies. It's a little like Line Dancing that way...
Batman: Arkham Knight will be available June 2, 2015 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
