Review: Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack (360)

tales from space mutant blobs attack
Drinkbox Studios is one of those Canadian independent developers that just seems to know how to scratch that gaming itch in some of the most inventive ways.

Guacamelee is easily one of the more entertaining platformers right now, blending Latin tropes with a side-scrolling Metroid-vania experience (and some downright silliness). Tales From Space: Mutant Blobs Attack takes older B-movie tropes and throws the concept into an action/puzzle hybrid. One part Katamari Damacy, one part side-scroller, one part puzzle and a whole lot of chuckling. You start off absorbing random pieces of small garbage on the floor of a college dorm and work your way up to absorbing buildings by the game end – and honestly, who doesn't chuckle at the thought of absorbing an entire city block just by rolling over it?

Review: Guacamelee - Super Turbo Championship Edition (PS4)

Guacamelee - Super Turbo Championship Edition

Guacamelee steps back into the ring with a “Game of the year edition” treatment: Super Turbo Championship Edition! Aside from being a nod to Street Fighter, this rendition gives us an overhauled story which features some new abilities, enemies, and the surprisingly satisfying ability called INTENSO, but is it worth donning Juan's mask once again?

Review: Guacamelee! (PS3)

Perhaps the lasting legacy of this generation of consoles will be the rise of independent (indie) development studios.

At a time when big game studios appear to be struggling in a sluggish economy, indie developers seem to have flourished. Sony, Microsoft and Apple have made it easy for these developers bring their works to the masses. 2012 was a great example as the indie game, Journey, took home many game of the year awards.

Drinkbox Studios new title, Guacamelee! feels like another title that should get a lot of attention from gamers.

Interview: Teddy Lee (Mutant Blobs Attack!)

Formed in 2008, Drinkbox Studios's first game was the warmly received Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack!!!, a launch title for the Playstation Vita, which also recently appeared on PC. Teddy Lee, a designer on Mutant Blobs Attack, gives us a little bit of his time to talk about how the game came together, how the inputs of the PS Vita affected gameplay, how the puzzles were designed, sets the record straight on the controls, talks a little about their next game, Guacamelee, and the biggest challenge indie developers face with the onset of the next generation of consoles.
The introductions please: Name, the education/career arc that brought you to the game industry, what you do at Drinkbox and your role on Tales From Space: Mutant Blobs Attack.
Hey, my name is Teddy Lee and I was one of the designers on Mutant Blobs Attack.  I have a University degree in Computing, which is more of a participation ribbon than anything else. I actually got into the industry because an interviewer took interest in these small games that I had made using game making software.  Since then I've jumped through several job positions until I landed here at Drinkbox Studios.

Review: Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack (PC)

Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack debuted on the Playstation Vita in the early part of 2012 to much critical praise. Since it was essentially a launch title for the system it put to use some of the touchscreen/pad capabilities of the system. While such support on PC might have made the game more "Visceral!" it still fares quite well as an action puzzler.
