E3 2012: Hybrid XBLA Hands-On
Hybrid is a third person online shooter set in a post apocalyptic world during a war between the Variant and Paladin. There's no walking in the environments, rather you fly from cover to cover. Once behind cover, you can move along it or you can jump over it or fly to another piece of cover. This may sound a little nutty at first, but this mechanic works extremely well.
Online play supports up to six players at once. Prior to playing, you pick which faction you wish to fight as. The points you accumulate in each match are added to points from other players of the same faction towards an overall score. These scores are then broken down across the globe in different regions.
During my time with the game I played the standard team deathwatch and capture the flag modes. Capture the flag was the more enjoyable of the two. The controls feel solid and the action is fast and frantic. During the matches you can accumulate kill streak rewards, which unlock bots you can use to attack the other team. At times the on-screen action can get a little crazy to the point where it feels like you're playing a full 8-on-8 match.
Hybrid is different from a lot of online shooters out there and that is what makes it so enjoyable. While the cover based gameplay can take some getting used to, it delivers a great all around experience. Hybrid releases later this summer.
