The original Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse appeared in 1990 on the Sega Genesis (or Mega Drive depending on where you lived). The singular goal was to rescue Minnie Mouse from the clutches of Mizrabel by journeying into the Castle of Illusion and collecting gems to build a rainbow bridge to Mizrabel's throne room. In hindsight, the action was pedestrian and simple to navigate, but at the time I recall being utterly enthralled by the animation. |

With the tepid response by critics and consumers of the Epic Mickey games, it was a little surprising to hear about a remake of Castle of Illusion. No denying that Mickey Mouse has global appeal and instant recognition, but as a video game icon, has his time come and gone? |

It looks like Mickey is up to his usual whimsical hijinks. Bopping bad guys on the noggin seems to be the order of the day. |

Big and bright, the graphics do the source material justice. Note the big "W" on the envelope on the left. This room looks suspiciously like a stage select area. |

Above and below: Even the classic "jump" of the original game appears to have been captured. Getting that arcing leap where it looks like Mickey actually has some weight to him and isn't just a digital construct is extremely important to the game. Apples being thrown, bouncey springs, interesting levels, won't mean a damn thing if the jump isn't the same as the original. |
The remake of Castle of Illusion is expected this Summer for download on Playstation 3, Xbox 360, and PC.
