Preview: South Park: The Stick of Truth (360, PS3)

South Park: The Stick of Truth is in development at Obsidian Entertainment (Neverwinter Nights 2, Fallout: New Vegas, Alpha Protocol) so it's no surprise that the game takes a role-playing path through the South Park universe.
Stick of Truth is written by South Park creators Matt Parker and Trey Stone and the pair are supplying a ton of voice over for the project. I like this split. Let Obsidian get the game mechanics and systems in place, something they're pretty good at, and let the writers do what they do best. On paper, a proper collaboration like this is long overdue when it comes to licensed games (or just games in general).
Billed as an episode of South Park "starring YOU!" expect some high concept comedy and subtle humour.
Stick of Truth survived the demise of THQ. When the former publisher went under, the property was snatched by up Ubisoft. From the sounds of it, the game was basically finished when Ubisoft acquired the publishing rights. That tells me that Ubisoft liked what they saw, which appears to be a weird amalgam Lord of the Rings, Asian-influenced source material, and, well, South Park, with it's own take on what makes for a good Summon.
South Park: The Stick of Truth is expected Q4 2013 for PC, Xbox 360, and Playstation 3.
