Preview: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (360, PS3, PS4, XBO)

I'm unclear as to why Konami releases details of Metal Gear Solid game. Does anyone really know what's going? Never mind the larger narrative and connection between games in a series that spans more than 25 years, I have trouble following what happens moment to moment. So, when Konami provides some of the story details of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, which involves Big Boss waking from a coma and heading into Soviet-era Afghanistan to investigate (i.e. destroy) the "mysterious" XOF organization my brain simply turns off in order to protect itself.
The biggest change for The Phantom Pain is the inclusion of a fiery Pegasus. Okay, maybe that's the second biggest -- and likely induced by LSD or heroin, this is Afghanistan after all -- the biggest change is the move to an open world environment and the "action espionage" options that affords. It seems like Big Boss will be able to deviate from a linear story path to take part in missions of opportunity. How it all comes together (obviously) remains to be seen. Or unseen as it looks like there's more opportunities to sneak around, including the ability to hide behind... wait for it... horses.
There's one description for this screenshot and that is: Rambo III. Considering the Afghanistan setting and horses, this practically -- okay, hopefully -- confirms the inclusion of one John Rambo (voiced by David Hayter).
I've heard some people say, with a straight face, that they've learned a lot about weapons and military hardware from the Metal Gear Solid series over the years. To me, that's kind of like saying you learned a lot about baseball and football from Peanuts. Some will take a look at this screenshot and laud the series for an accurate portrayal of emergency first aid. I'll wager that seconds before this, Big Boss was being carried over someone's shoulder.
What's Big Boss looking for? A release date probably. Konami hasn't announced one, but the fact that Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 are still included as platforms for the game (along with XBO and PS4) makes me guess the release will happen sometime in Spring 2014. It's not surprising because with a day/night cycle to figure out, base building and development to balance, and the inclusion of a connection to real-life smartphones, the development team has a lot to figure out. Open world games are already ripe for chaos creation but throw in a Metal Gear Solid story and, well, you might as well as add "Brain Melting" on the ESRB label.
Launch date on Xbox 360, Xbox One, Playstation 3 and 4, is unannounced at this time.
